Gauhati University is the first public university situated in North-East India. The University is located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was founded on 26th January 1948. The University is located to the west of Guwahati City and has more than 239 affiliated colleges with the university.
The University was formed by an act of State Legislature which was conducted on 26th January 1948. At the time of establishment Gauhati University have around 17 affiliated colleges and eight post Graduate Department On its establishment.
When it was founded the university started functioning from the city center and in 1955-56 it was shifted to present campus.
The University is located in Jalukbari in the Guwahati city area. On the southern side of the campus there is a hillock and on the northern side of the campus we can see the mighty river Brahmaputra flowing. More than 5000 students are studying in the campus where 3000 of them are residing in the hostels.
There are 22 halls of residence exclusively built for students. Along with the necessary civic amenities there is a guest house, post and telegraph office, SBI Branch, UBI Branch, Canteens, A market, parks, play grounds, auditorium, Indoor stadium etc for the students.
The university is located 10 Kms away from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Kamakhya Railway Station and 10 Kms from Guwahati Railway Station.
