The University of Kashmir is located on the western side of Dal Lake in the Srinagar City. It is situated in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. The University is established in 1956 and is a state university. It is awarded with Grade “A” by the NAAC in the year 2011.
From the time of establishment the university focused on the Hazratbal and encompose three adjacent areas viz. Amar Singh Bagh, Naseem Bagh and Mirza Bagh. The university campus spread over 263 acres.
A Major part of Amar Singh Bagh and Naseem Bagh constituted Hazratbal campus and this is situated on the north-eastern bank of Dal Lake. In early days many postgraduate departments, research and other centres were housed in Naseem Bagh.
The university resolved to develop Naseem Bagh into a heritage site and later many departments were shifted to other areas of the Hazratbal campus. Later in April 2013 Zakura Campus is developed on 300 Kanals of land near the Hazratbal campus to meet the expansion requirements of the university.
Mirza Bagh or “University Town” has two buildings and housing quarters of the university staff. With the idea of extending post graduate programmes to colleges and also established new campuses at Ananthnag and Baramulla was conceived by then Vice Chancellor professor J a k Tareen in the year 2002.
He received more than 30 crores fro developing the university from the prime ministers fund for over all development of main campus and for the establishment of new campuses. The campuses locations were changes for the reason of regular floods. This development of campuses by Professor Tareen became operational from the year 2008/09.
The university have a library named Allama Iqbal Library which has temperature controlled central library. It consists of national and international journals and magazines. The university also includes Internet browsing facility.
The university mainly focuses on Arts, Social Science, Faculty of Business & Financial Studies & Management, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Music & Fine arts, Faculty of Oriental Learning and many more.
