The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) University
The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) is the only deemed university which offers fisheries science exclusively in India. The University offer higher learning opportunities for the students who are interested in fisheries science.
CIFE has more than four decades of leadership in HRD with alumni aiding the development of fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. It also has many notable researches and technology advancements in the field of Fisheries sciences to its credit.
CIFE Institute is one of four main institutes working under Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the other three institutes were Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
Totally four sub centres work under CIFE, which include one at Kolkata (West Bengal), Rohtak (Haryana), Kakinada(Andhra Pradesh) and Powerkheda(Madhya Pradesh)
The institute was started in the year 1961 as an inservice training center which provides proficient training and education to fisheries professionals.
This works with the vision to meet the challenges in the fisheries sector. With all its efforts for more than 20 years CIFE came under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This is conferred Deemed University status in the year 1989 by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
From the time the Deemed University is working parallel on Research and education in its mandate. This is the significant contribution of the institute in enriching the quality of fisheries education.
The university offers Maaster of Fisheries Sciences (M.F.Sc) and PhD Programs in the specialized branches of fisheries science, undertakes research and also conducts the capacity development programs. Along with these it also provides the technical support and consultancy for developing agencies, fishers, farmers and entrepreneurs.
With the team of dedicated scientists and state of art infra structure facilities CIFE is partnered with the knowledge of led revolution to create the fisheries and aquaculture based sustainable rural livelihoods and it also offers food and nutritional security to the nation.
